FoW British 1st Airborne Journal (Updated: 27/7/10)

Postby Commissar Cmar » Sun Jul 11, 2010 4:45 pm

Been looking at starting a journal for a while, partly as a way to keep myself motivated. Was considering showing everything i own but have decided just to focus on my current project;

I'm assembling a force for Flames of War: the British 1st Airborne, from A Bridge Too Far. The 1st Division fought in Africa, Sicily and Europe, most famously they are known for their part in Operation Market-Garden (which the above mentioned book is specifically covering), the largest Airborne operation in history. The aim was to drop Airborne forces ahead of an advancing XXX Corps to capture bridges and gain a foothold over the Rhine river, and thus a point from which to drive into Germany.
The 1st Airborne Division was given the final bridge, located in Arhnem as their target, only one brigade would end up reaching the bridge under Col. Frost, with ~700 men they held one end of the bridge for 4 days before eventually surrending after they had expended every last bullet. The rest of the Division was held up at Oosterbeek, until, despite attempts to reinforce them, they were evacuated. XXX corps was 3 days behind schedule due to the Germans being in far better condition than expected and the paratroopers had held out for longer than they had been expected to be capable of. They also had to contend with a number of elite German division that they thought had been destroyed in previous battles or weren't believed to be located there.
The ultimate aim was to end the war by Christmas 1944, though the mission was a failure nobody has ever said it wasn't worth the attempt. The 1st Airborne Division was all but destroyed in the operation.

Well that a bit of the history behind the force out of the way. In this journal I will try to show progress of how I am going. I will also try to explain how I am doing various bits a pieces, so feel free to ask questions or for me to explain something in particular.

Test Squad
This is the first squad that I have done as a test to make sure I'm happy with what the end product is before I go mass producing it. I'm doing almost everything using the methods shown in the back of A Bridge Too Far.

Lessons learnt doing this:
1. The road needed to be fully modelled before I put anything else on the base.
2. Milliput isn't suitable for the level of detail. (Now using greenstuff)
3. Bases on the figures need to be filed down lower before being glued on.
Another error that I made was to use two beret models as they are rarer, even more so the one with the bren machine gun (one on the left) as there are very few of them.

My intention is that every base looks like a mini-diorama. Each base is effectively half a squad but as they are in a city fight looking map they would be opperating in small groups anyway so should still look reasonably uniform. This particular base has two guys covering a spot whilst waving the other two on.

I'm currently making up bases with the cobblestone pattern out of greenstuff in preparation for making a mould of the bases. It take about an hour to produce a single standard size base, of which I've now done 5 and have 1 to go, then 4 command bases.

I currently have paints on order (along with more models and the last things I need to play) which will allow me to paint the test base and determine whether I can paint the figures on the base or whether I will have to paint them off the base them put them on.

My primary aim is to have this list: viewtopic.php?f=148&t=5522 done by Genesis next year, though I should have way more done by then as my secondary aim involves a game of Total War. Though with a campaign later this year I'm hoping to have most of it assembled by the end of this uni semester.

Bases are now finished (except for the large arty bases which I don't have yet), and half have had the edges cleaned up.

The next step is making a mold so I don't have to repeat this long, tiring process. Fingers crossed the next steps work (which is why I'm using the small bases, they'll be easier to remake if I destroy them).

Mold ready for silicone rubber:

Then pour in rubber and leave to bake for 24 hours before removing from mold:

Now all I can do is wait till 1.30-2pm tomorrow before taking it out and then leaving it to air dry for another 24 hours before I can test it.

Next things to do are:
1. Undercoat the test model (no rush as I'm still waiting on the paints).
2. Make a vibrating tray (aim to have it done by the end of the weekend).

This is looking good so far! Sorry I havent been able to help out in person with the moulding. Just remember to lightly dust the inside of the mould with talcom powder before pouring your resin in, this will aid in making the resin flow into all the little gaps and remove the need for a vibrating tray. As these are flat moulds you wont need a release agent either.

Now you tell me after I've tried making a tray (haven't been able to get it right but found that a sonic jewelary cleaner with a board on top may be alright).

Will try the talcom powder when I test the mould, will be either Monday or Tuesday.

Well I've taken the mould out, now need to give it 24 hours to air dry. Looks good, though a couple of base moulds have a few air bubbles, though they look small enough that they shouldn't be an issue.

Also had to glue the greenstuff back onto one base as it came of as i took it out of the mould.

Will try producing the first bases tomorrow arvo if I get off work early enough.

Well after having to go and get one of the bottle of resin changed as I couldn't open it (nor could either of my parents). The guy at solid solutions did manage to open it but it had leak, glueing the lid closed. The next two bottle he tried also had this problem but the third one was fine. Then the phone rang as I went to begin pouring the mix together, anybody would think i wasn't allowed to test the mould...

Anyway I've managed to test it and...it worked!

There is obviously a bit of cleaning up required. One base also has an air bubble the has made a hole in the corner. Most of the other imperfections shouldn't be a problem though as the base design means they are hard to pick out and should work with the bases theme.
